There is now a temptation in the research community to automate some of that Alignment Assembly civic gym. Specifically there is software called the “Habermas Machine”—it’s real software—that can interview people individually and build a digital twin of these people. And then in silico , that means in simulation, these digital twins start deliberating in a discursive democracy. It’s very good. It produced extremely good policies. But if we just rely on delegating our deliberation to the robots, it’s exactly like sending our robots to the gym to lift weights for us. I’m sure they’re very impressive. They can lift a lot of weight. But what is the point?
