It’s putting AI in the loop of humans, instead of putting humans in the loop of AI, which feels like a hamster in a hamster wheel. It just keeps going faster and faster, but the hamster has no control, no steering over the hamster wheel. It is possible to develop AI systems that are symbiotic with local communities and that do not cost so much energy to train. But it does require actually knowing where you’re steering the AI models, which again points to democracy as a technology—broad listening and so on—so that society can very quickly converge and say, “We want AI systems in these roles, and please train AI systems for these roles only.”
