Those are great questions. In Taiwan, for example, we sent 200,000 SMS text messages from the official 111 number to random Taiwanese citizens, asking what to do about trolls, deepfakes, and attacks on information integrity online. People shared their ideas. Then we basically asked people to volunteer like a jury. Four hundred and fifty people, randomly selected but statistically representative of Taiwan, came into online conversations in rooms of ten people each—45 rooms total—and had these discussions. People definitely said, for example, “You should not be able to use money to buy trollish influence that impersonates celebrities and gets them to say words they never said.” Those deepfake ads need to go, but we need to do that without censoring anyone.
