I also worked for the past couple of years with Governor Gavin Newsom of California and his first partner Jennifer to work on an Engaged California platform. Initially, we built this to have a conversation with teenagers and even younger children on social media usage because it is a classic case of “something about them without them.” And so we want to include them and their parents. But on the week of launch, we did not get to launch because wildfire happened in Los Angeles. So we pivoted instantly to have a conversation using bridging algorithms for the survivors of the Eton and Palisade fire to talk about how to mitigate and prevent future wildfires. And it produced, you can check the report online, very good “uncommon ground,” surprising common ground, around all the different measures that the state government can take. And encouraged by this experience, they are now writing it into law so that it becomes a state-level infrastructure. And they are also consulting the internal state employees so that they can suggest better ways to use AI in their line of work. So it’s like government efficiency—like DOGE, but bottom-up, not top-down.
