We sent 200,000 text messages to random telephone numbers across Taiwan asking a simple question: What should we do together about deepfake fraud? People offered ideas, and dozens signed up for online conversations that we call an alignment assembly —an online citizen assembly. We chose 447 people who were statistically representative of the Taiwanese population in terms of occupation, gender, location, and so on. In groups of ten, they held conversations.
