Part of the reason why is that it is not the individual checked facts from journalism or from the state that inoculates young minds against polarization. Rather, it is the act of going through civic journalism, reporting, and sousveillance as a class with their peers that inoculates the young against polarization and outrage. There’s a lot of this multi-dimensional accountability going on in Taiwan, which may look very strange from a very individualistic Western perspective, but it also means that radical transparency is much easier to practice as a norm in the political sector.
