Well, first of all, not all AI companies are proprietary. There are AI companies built upon the idea of open access; for example, Mistral is famously doing that in France. Even OpenAI, which has “open” in its name, started doing open models this year. Just a week ago, we worked as part of ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools) with OpenAI to release the Safeguard model. This is a model you can run on a high-end phone that looks at any policy—like, any community can bring their own policy about what content construes as culturally appropriate.
