At the end of that year, I was invited to basically play that role but online, building the systems where people can have unfettered access and conversations without getting censored by social media—Big Tech at the time—so that we could determine policies together. We not only resolved issues around Uber, workers’ rights, and so on, but we also tackled disinformation attacks and polarization attacks coming from our authoritarian neighbor. We shortened the tax filing process from three hours to three minutes in 2016–2017, again tapping into the wisdom of the crowd. Anyone could contribute ideas, and we also published transparently the government’s spending and procurement so that people could comment freely on it.
